The People’s National Congress (PNC), the ruling party, has officially opened candidacy for its internal elections, set to take place on October 19.

At a press conference yesterday, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, the country’s health minister and chair of the PNC’s elections committee, described the upcoming poll as the largest of its kind held by a political party in the nation’s history.

According to Khaleel, a total of 2,095 positions will be contested, including presidents of the youth and women’s movements in each residential island. Additionally, party parliamentarians will automatically assume the role of president for their respective constituencies. For constituencies where the party does not hold a parliamentary seat, members will elect their constituency president, vice president, and members of the party’s steering committees.

The election will see seven-member steering committees formed on islands with populations below 3,000 people, while larger islands will have nine-member committees.

To run for the presidency of a constituency, candidates are required to submit membership forms for 50 new party members, while vice presidential candidates must provide 25 forms. Candidacy will remain open until September 30.
