Although Parliament is currently in recess, it has been convening for extraordinary sessions to expedite the appointment of a new Prosecutor General. This move was necessitated by the dismissal of Hussain Shameem in a no-confidence vote on August 22. The law stipulates that a replacement must be appointed within 30 days.

Abbas was nominated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. His nomination was forwarded to the committee for review on September 11, where he received 93 per cent approval. His candidacy was then approved unanimously by the committee.

In the extraordinary sitting on this morning, Abbas secured the Parliament’s backing with a unanimous vote of 85.

During his committee interview, Abbas stated that he applied for the position independently, without any direction from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu or other officials. He assured that his approach would be characterised by impartiality, integrity, and transparency.
