MV+ News Desk | September 18, 2024

Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has announced that the Maldives is collaborating with Hollywood to produce a film aimed at promoting the country internationally.

The initiative is part of broader efforts by the government to attract investment and support the development of a creative economy, a key goal of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.

During a press conference at the President’s Office, yesterday, Minister Saeed highlighted the government’s proactive steps to encourage investment in the Maldives. As part of this, discussions have been initiated with a Hollywood startup, which has already visited the country and held meetings with a wide range of stakeholders. The company is expected to make a second visit soon.

Minister Saeed revealed that a letter had been sent to the writer of Finding Nemo in an effort to involve influential figures from the film industry in the project. He emphasised that the production would not only help promote the Maldives as a tourist destination but also showcase the nation’s investment opportunities to a global audience.

Additionally, Saeed noted that Muizzu is working to ensure that the creative economy becomes a key sector recognised by the government. In support of this vision, the Business Centre Corporation (BCC) is actively developing a creative economy hub to foster innovation and artistic ventures.

While there have been calls from the public to promote the Maldives through films and animations, this marks the first concrete step by authorities to pursue such a strategy.
