Maldives Wins Global Islamic Finance Leadership Award at 2024 GIFA

The Maldives has been honoured with the Global Islamic Finance Leadership Award at the 2024 Global Islamic Finance Awards (GIFA) ceremony. 

The 14th GIFA award gala took place on Tuesday evening at Villa Nautica in the Maldives. The award was presented to the Maldives in the country category, with Finance Minister Dr. Mohamed Shafeeq accepting the accolade on behalf of the nation.

In addition, former Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik was also recognised with the Global Islamic Finance Leadership Award. In a statement on X, Dr. Waheed expressed his honour at receiving the award, which acknowledges the contributions of both current and former heads of state and industry leaders. 

Dr. Waheed was recognised for his efforts in advancing Islamic finance in the Maldives, including the establishment of the Maldives Islamic Bank, the Hajj Corporation, and the introduction of Islamic bonds, among other initiatives. Previous awardees include leaders from Indonesia, Senegal, Kazakhstan, Ethiopia, and Malaysia.

GIFA, founded by Edbiz Corporation in 2011, aims to promote and advocate for Islamic banking and finance while emphasising social responsibility. The awards celebrate the achievements of individuals, institutions, and governments in this field.
