Man Accused of Assault Commits Suicide in Maafushi Prison

A 62-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl has reportedly taken his own life in Maafushi Prison. 

The individual had been in custody since March and was discovered by prison officers when they arrived to serve him breakfast. The Ministry of Homeland, Security and Technology confirmed that the cause of death was hanging. Further details surrounding the incident have not been disclosed, and it remains uncertain whether there were surveillance cameras in the cell.

The deceased man had a prior criminal record, having previously served time for harassing a woman on the street and soliciting physical relations.
