Muizzu explained how the Maldives, despite its small size, occupies a crucial position in the Indian Ocean, with over half of the world’s daily oil consumption and a significant portion of international trade passing through the region. “Anyone who would like to have a say, and sway the balance of power in the Indian Ocean, would find the Maldives an attractive place to influence,” he said.

The president underscored his commitment to safeguarding the sovereignty and independence of the Maldives, a key campaign promise during his election last year. He pledged to enhance the Maldives’ role in maintaining a rule-based international order in the region. “We value our part in it,” Muizzu stated, stressing the importance of multilateralism in the nation’s foreign policy.

Muizzu also outlined the Maldives’ leadership in climate action, calling for immediate steps to manage the global climate crisis. He mentioned the country’s historical role in advocating for climate adaptation, including the landmark 1989 Malé Declaration, and reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to renewable energy, with a target of generating 33% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2028.

On the domestic front, Muizzu discussed his plans to diversify the Maldivian economy, including promoting foreign investment, expanding tourism markets, and fostering digital transformation through the use of artificial intelligence. He highlighted the recent passage of a new Foreign Investment Act aimed at creating a more favourable environment for investors. The president also pointed to plans for eco-friendly urban developments such as the Ras Malé smart city project, which will prioritise innovation and sustainability.

President Muizzu closed by reinforcing the importance of strong governance and anti-corruption measures in strengthening the Maldives’ young democracy. He expressed gratitude for the support of international partners, including the United States, in helping to bolster the country’s institutions and maintain stability in the Indian Ocean.

In his address, Muizzu praised Princeton university for its role in fostering global governance principles, particularly in a time of global conflict and human rights challenges
