Three Individuals Apprehended in Villingili Drug Trafficking Operation

The police have arrested three individuals in a counter-narcotics operation conducted over the weekend in Ga. Villingili.

Authorities confirmed that the arrests were made as part of a joint operation between the Vilingili Police Station and the Narcotics Intelligence Department on Saturday, September 28. The operation was initiated following information regarding a drug trafficking network in the area.

The suspects have been identified as:

  • Mohamed Zahwan, 23, Vilas, GDh. Gadhdhoo
  • Mohamed Thagiyyu, 25, Zoom, GA. Vilingili
  • Mohamed Athoof Habeeb, 24, Athens, GA. Vilingili

Following their arrests, police searched the residence of one of the suspects, discovering narcotics including seven rubber packets, four rubber pieces, a cellophane packet, and a 20-litre container of alcohol.

The suspects were presented before the Vilingili Magistrate Court for remand hearings on Sunday, with Athoof remanded in police custody for 15 days and the other two for 10 days. The investigation is ongoing, led by the Vilingili Police Station.

Arrested for Theft of MVR 400,000, Foreign National Claims Setup

A foreign national arrested in connection with the theft of over MVR 400,000 from under a motorcycle seat has claimed he was framed.

On 14 September, police arrested Bangladeshi national Jahangir Alam in relation to the theft of MVR 442,750. He remains in custody for the ongoing investigation.

During a recent court hearing to extend his detention, the police presented evidence purportedly linking Jahangir to the crime, including CCTV footage showing him retrieving an item from under the motorcycle seat. However, Jahangir maintains that he is innocent and alleges that he was wrongfully accused in a business dispute.

His legal representatives informed the court that police have not questioned him adequately regarding the case, and they expressed concerns over the slow progress of the investigation. Jahangir is a foreigner who is married to two individuals in the Maldives, has three children, and is reportedly residing in compliance with local regulations. The Criminal Court has approved a five-day extension of his detention.

Individual Arrested for Alleged Theft of Tourist Bag and Sale of Contents

An individual has been arrested for allegedly stealing a bag belonging to two tourists and selling its valuable contents.

According to police, they received a report last night regarding a bag left by two Chinese tourists on Boduthakurufaanu Magu that had gone missing. Within three hours, Galolhu Police successfully located the bag.

The arrested suspect, identified as Zabeeh Mohamed from Ranfaru, Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo, is believed to have sold some of the bag’s contents, which included a laptop, a hard drive, a power bank, passports, and other items.

Two Expatriates Deported After Arrest for Illegal US Dollar Trading

Two of five expatriates arrested for engaging in illegal US dollar trading on the black market have been deported, according to Maldives Immigration.

The individuals were apprehended following a tip-off regarding their involvement in unauthorised dollar trading activities within the country. An immigration spokesperson stated that the deportations took place last week, with efforts ongoing to deport the remaining three individuals; however, no specific dates for their deportation have been disclosed.

As part of a special operation, Maldives Immigration has been conducting raids on expatriate residences to identify and deport individuals residing illegally in the country. To date, over 4,000 expatriates have been deported under this initiative, with reports indicating that some have fled to other islands to evade deportation.
