The Ministry of Defence has revealed that it has identified 55 facilities in Malé City that store hazardous chemicals.

The ministry announced the launch of “Operation Hiraas Faas” with the aim to ensure compliance with regulations governing chemical storage and trading, while also raising public awareness about the laws and guidelines related to the import and storage of chemicals.

In a social media update, the Defence Ministry reported that 347 residential buildings were inspected in the first three days of the operation. Additionally, inspections were conducted at 31 warehouses and 24 outlets involved in the trade of hazardous chemicals, with information gathered from these evaluations.

The operation, set to continue until 15 October, will assess compliance with regulations at chemical storage facilities and businesses, identify areas prone to fire hazards, and evaluate existing challenges in the sector.

This initiative follows numerous complaints regarding violations of chemical storage regulations in the city. Currently, the storage of any form of chemicals in Malé is prohibited, with a designated area for such activities located in Hulhumalé.
