Seafarers have been advised to monitor weather updates and take necessary safety measures before embarking on journeys. The police recommended that vessels be equipped with safety provisions, avoid overloading, keep emergency contact information clearly displayed, and share travel manifests with vessel owners or operators.
The southwest monsoon is becoming more active in the Maldives, prompting both the Met Office and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to advise caution. Over the next five days, wind speeds are forecasted at 15-25 miles per hour in the northern and central Maldives, 13-23 miles per hour in the south, with gusts reaching up to 55 miles per hour. The region is expected to experience heavy showers, thunderstorms, and possible wave surges during high tides.
The NDMA has issued further guidance for the public to safeguard property against potential flooding and strong winds. Residents are encouraged to take preemptive steps, such as blocking water entry points and reinforcing roofs. The authority strongly advises limiting sea travel to essential trips, ensuring that vessels are equipped with functioning safety and communication devices, and monitoring weather alerts continuously.
