Maldives Launches India’s RuPay Service
The Maldives has officially launched India’s RuPay card service in a bid to bolster the Maldivian Rufiyaa.
Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the RuPay card is a pioneering global payment network that enjoys widespread acceptance across ATMs, point-of-sale devices, and e-commerce platforms throughout India. It facilitates electronic payments across nearly all Indian banks and financial institutions.
The launch ceremony took place today, following bilateral talks in New Delhi between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The first transaction using the RuPay card was made at Authentic Maldives.
The introduction of RuPay cards in the Maldives follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2019 between Bank of Maldives (BML) and NPCI.
With this new service, RuPay has been incorporated into BML’s network, allowing for broader acceptance of the card.
