Each participating university will provide two scholarships, covering tuition fees, travel costs, and living expenses while studying in Japan.

The scholarship is specifically designed for employees of various government agencies who wish to pursue master’s degrees, thereby enhancing the human resources essential for effective administration. The initiative aims to empower participants to contribute meaningfully to the formulation of social and economic development plans, enabling them to take on leadership roles in the nation’s progress.

Since its inception in 2020, the JDS scholarship has been available to individuals pursuing the following programmes:

  • Master of Arts in Economics or Master of Arts in International Development at the International University of Japan (IUJ)
  • Master of Arts in International Relations at Ritsumeikan University
  • Master of Science in International Cooperation Policy at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU)

Applications are open to individuals aged between 22 and 39 as of April 1, 2025. Eligible candidates must be civil servants holding an MQA-validated bachelor’s degree, or permanent employees of independent institutions, courts, or related agencies, with at least two years of full-time work experience.

To assist potential applicants, JDS will organise promotional seminars, providing detailed information about the scholarship and guidance on preparing application documents. Applications must be submitted online by 4:00 p.m. on November 24. For further information, please visit the JDS scholarship website.

Since its launch, the JDS scholarship has enabled 21 students to study in Japan, with 12 of them having returned to the Maldives upon completing their master’s degrees.
