Police Arrest Man over Threats to Muizzu
Police have arrested a man accused of threatening to assassinate President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and various state officials via social media.
The suspect, identified as Abdulla Miyad, aged 40, was taken into custody last evening after returning to the Maldives from abroad. Authorities confirmed they are actively investigating the online threats.
The threats were made in a comment on President Muizzu’s social media page during a live broadcast of his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on 25 September. While the threat appeared under the name “Ablo Maid Yousuf,” police have not determined whether this account represents an actual individual or an alias using a false identity.
The police disclosed on Wednesday that Miyad’s alleged threats included death threats to both the President and various state officials, as well as unspecified threats of harm to others. There were also reports of posts from the account in question promoting same-sex relationships, which remains a sensitive issue in the Maldives. The investigation is ongoing, with police saying that further details will be released as they become available.
