New Drainage System Reduces Flooding in Male’

A new drainage system near Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Male’ began operations yesterday, effectively managing flood levels that previously lasted for days.

Despite heavy rain on Friday morning causing flooding in other parts of the city, the area around the hospital remained clear.

A representative from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) confirmed the system’s activation, noting that while the road from Ameenee Magu to Thajudeen School is passable, flooding continues between Hiriya School and the Social Centre. The MNDF is also deploying pumps to assist with water removal in other affected areas.

The temporary drainage systems, installed in three key locations—including the ferry terminal and West Park—have significantly mitigated flooding. This initiative, which began on May 9, aims to address the city’s longstanding drainage issues.

Lt. Ahmed Firshan from the MNDF reported that the new system allows for rapid water discharge, stating, “The entire city could dry out within an hour.” Residents expressed relief, noting that areas that once flooded quickly remained dry despite heavy rainfall.

The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure is overseeing the project, with plans to extend drainage solutions to more areas. Additionally, the Chinese government is expected to assist with a permanent solution to the city’s flooding problems.
