In addition to these grants, the initiative has allocated MVR 6 million to improve the management of protected areas within Laamu Atoll.
“These grants will empower civil society and local authorities to protect and sustainably manage the unique ecosystems and biodiversity of Laamu Atoll,” Minister Thoriq stated. He underscored the vital role that local councils and associations play in environmental protection.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening local governance and enhancing the capacity of community organisations. “The government under President Muizzu will continue to empower councils and associations, improve their capabilities, and ensure their involvement in policy-making and implementation,” Thoriq added.
Launched in 2021 with GEF funding, the Endheri project is implemented by the Ministry of Environment to promote environmentally friendly policies across the Maldives. Its focus areas include reef restoration, sustainable development, and local capacity-building.
