ECM Resumes Dissolution Efforts for MRM

The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has commenced the process of dissolving the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM).

According to the ECM, the action is being pursued under Article 30 (a) of the Political Parties Act, which allows the High Court to order the dissolution of a political party based on a case submitted by the Commission or a private individual. The ECM has requested that any matters related to MRM’s pending debts, if applicable, be submitted to the party’s office by November 10th.

The Commission’s decision to dissolve MRM stems from the party’s failure to increase its membership to the legally required minimum of 3,000 members, despite receiving a three-month notice. As of April 19th, MRM reported having 2,231 members.

In response to the ECM’s initial decision, MRM filed a case with the Civil Court, which ruled on February 12th that the Commission’s decision was unlawful. The ECM subsequently appealed this ruling to the High Court.

In August, the ECM reiterated its intention to dissolve MRM, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding the party’s membership status in compliance with the Political Parties Act.
