The Airports Council International (ACI) has officially launched its Airport Excellence in Security (APEX Security) programme at Velana International Airport (VIA), the main airport in the Maldives.

The launch ceremony took place on 20 October 2024, at the Noovilu Seaplane Terminal. The APEX Security programme aims to evaluate the current safety and security measures at VIA and to develop an action plan to enhance these standards. The assessment is set to last five days.

Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, CEO and Managing Director of the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), highlighted the rapid development of VIA during his remarks at the ceremony. He noted that efforts are underway to modernise the airport’s infrastructure in line with increasing airline operations and passenger traffic.

“Ensuring the safety and security of all users at the airport is our top priority,” Shareef stated, adding that the assessment is a crucial part of these ongoing efforts. He confirmed that a tailored action plan will be developed based on the assessment’s findings.

The APEX Security programme is designed to bolster the security of VIA with guidance from security operations experts. This assessment is being conducted in collaboration with the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC).

MACL reiterated its commitment to upholding safety and security at VIA in compliance with international standards. The company has made significant strides in improving safety and security measures at the airport, working alongside prominent international organisations such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), ACI, and the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The launch ceremony was attended by MACL’s deputy managing directors, Mohamed Lamman and Mujthaba Latheef, as well as senior officials from the company and those responsible for conducting the assessment.
