Parliament Rejects Emergency Motion on Delayed Bill to Ban Israeli Passports
The Speaker of Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, today rejected an emergency motion concerning delays in enacting a bill proposed by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to ban Israeli passports in response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The motion was submitted by North Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim. However, Speaker Abdulla stated that the motion did not meet the necessary criteria to be accepted as an emergency motion.
In June, South Galolhu MP Meekail Naseem introduced an amendment to the Immigration Act seeking to prohibit Israeli passport holders from entering the Maldives. The bill has since remained in committee, with no further progress made.
