Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has raised concerns over the government-proposed legislative amendments, warning they could pose a risk to the country’s democratic foundations.
In a statement, Fayyaz stressed the importance of protecting the Maldives’ constitutional principles, which were established over decades, from any potential infringement by current or future administrations.
The government has introduced a bill in parliament proposing fines of over MVR 100,000 for political parties, a move that has triggered alarm within the MDP. On social media platform X yesterday, Fayyaz criticised the bill as an attempt to undermine the MDP’s longstanding commitment to fostering democratic values in the Maldives.
“These bills are part of a broader agenda to obscure the fundamental values of people’s empowerment and government accountability,” said Fayyaz, a former member of parliament and government minister.
According to Fayyaz, the proposed amendments pose a threat to principles of transparency and public empowerment that underpin Maldivian governance. The MDP, he noted, has spent the past two decades working to establish a political culture that prioritises people’s power, pushing back against oppression and injustice. He argued that recent legislative proposals erode this progress and cautioned against any move to weaken democratic structures with changing administrations.
Reflecting on the past 16 years, Fayyaz emphasised the need to revisit the Constitution to reinforce its principles against future challenges. He expressed the MDP’s commitment to spearheading efforts to protect the democratic foundations of the country.
MDP’s concerns extend beyond the proposed Political Parties Act Amendment Bill, with the party voicing apprehension about the broader direction of government policy.
