First Batch of Stray Cats Set for Collection This Week, Says Minister
The Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr Aishath Rameela, has announced the upcoming transfer of the first group of stray cats to “Olhuhiyaa,” the country’s inaugural pet care facility.
This initial relocation, set to take place within the week, marks the start of a structured plan to address the growing stray cat population in the Greater Malé Region. Dr Rameela highlighted the presence of over 4,000 stray cats in the region, many of which suffer from health issues due to a lack of proper care.
Recognising the challenges of gathering all cats at once, she outlined a gradual approach in which small groups of cats will be transported to the facility. Each group will undergo health assessments and receive necessary treatments upon arrival, with the added goal of registering each cat to reduce the unowned cat population over time.
The minister further explained that Olhuhiyaa is not only intended to offer shelter but also to provide a safe environment for both stray and pet cats. The facility aims to help control disease spread and address public concerns over stray animals. Dr. Rameela expressed optimism about the project’s impact, contingent on effective implementation.
In addition to housing stray cats, the facility will offer a range of services for pet owners, including a grooming salon and temporary care for cats while their owners are away. Dr Rameela also announced plans for a future adoption programme, allowing members of the public to adopt cats from the facility once it is fully operational.
The ministry has also temporarily suspended cat imports for sale, as the country currently has just one trained veterinarian. However, Dr. Rameela noted that more Maldivians are pursuing veterinary studies, and she affirmed that the facility will eventually be managed exclusively by local professionals.
Olhuhiyaa’s permanent home will be a purpose-built, four-storey facility equipped to support various services, marking a significant step in the Maldives’ commitment to animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.
