Gov’t Launches National Initiative to Address Teacher Shortage
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu launched a national initiative this morning to address the teacher shortage in the Maldives.
The ‘National Teacher Training Program’ aims to boost the number of qualified teachers and improve the overall quality of education in the country.
The programme focuses on training individuals for subjects facing significant teacher shortages, ensuring a more robust workforce in the education sector. It is part of the President’s electoral pledge to provide locally-trained teachers for Maldivian schools.

In attendance at the ceremony were Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu, as well as senior officials from the government, colleges, and universities. Prior to the event, information sessions were held for secondary students to raise awareness of the training opportunities available.
The teacher shortage remains a significant challenge in the education system. The Ministry of Education has previously stated that the sector requires more than 2,000 teachers, with 250 of those needed for primary education.
The government has awarded scholarships to 135 students beginning their A-level studies, all of whom aspire to pursue careers in teaching.

During the event, the President presented scholarships to the selected students. One student from each participating school received the award document.
The programme will enable students to begin their teaching degrees after completing a foundational course. Furthermore, the Ministry of Education has announced that each student enrolled in the programme will receive a monthly stipend of MVR 1,500. Minister Ismail Shafeeu previously highlighted that Maldivian schools are currently facing a shortage of approximately 2,000 teachers.
