The annual Dhiraagu Maldives Road Race (DMRR) has successfully raised MVR 680,850 for child protection initiatives, with proceeds directed to 12 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) supporting children’s wellbeing across the Maldives.
This year’s event, held on 25 October 2024, marked the 15th edition of the DMRR, the largest annual run in the country dedicated to promoting social causes.
In line with previous years, this year’s DMRR was devoted to child protection, offering a platform for NGOs to raise both funds and awareness for children-focused initiatives.
Dhiraagu, in partnership with 12 NGOs, aimed to support various child welfare causes, ranging from inclusion and well-being to the prevention of abuse.
Participants could nominate their preferred NGO during registration, and Dhiraagu distributed a special grant of MVR 200,000 among the top five nominated organisations. In addition to this grant, MVR 100 from each runner’s registration fee and proceeds from special bib sales were shared among the 12 partner NGOs, raising a total of MVR 680,850.
The top five nominated NGOs each received MVR 80,071. These organisations are:
- Cancer Society of Maldives
- Maldives Autism Association
- ARC – Advocating the Rights of Children
- Maldives Thalassaemia Society (MTS)
- Child Abuse Prevention Society (CAPS)
The remaining partner NGOs, each receiving MVR 40,071, include:
- Tiny Hearts of Maldives
- Blind and Visually Impaired Society of Maldives (BVISM)
- Care Society
- Moms Aid
- Society for Health Education (SHE)
- Maldives Association of Persons with Disabilities (MAPD)
- Diabetes Society of Maldives
The DMRR has grown to become the first and only international race in the Maldives recognised by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), featuring a route certified by World Athletics. Dhiraagu has already set a date for the next event, with the 2025 DMRR scheduled for 24 October.
