ADB Grants USD 21 Million to Maldives for Disaster Management and Food Security
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 21 million financing package for the Maldives to strengthen disaster management and address food security concerns related to climate change.
The package, announced by the ADB, includes a USD 4 million loan and a USD 17.95 million grant. According to the ADB, the funding will support the Maldives in enhancing disaster prevention, improving management capabilities, and boosting food security.
Key initiatives include upgrading equipment at the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office), installing an early warning system in Malé and Addu City, and establishing a stormwater drainage system in Kulhudhuffushi City.
In addition, the package will introduce climate-smart urban farming equipment to the Maldives, with training sessions planned for residents in Haa Alif Atoll and Addu City. The funding will also aid the development of a multipurpose agricultural facility at the Hanimaadhoo Agriculture Centre in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, designed for research and relevant studies.
This financing package underscores the ADB’s continued commitment to supporting the Maldives in addressing the economic and infrastructural challenges posed by climate change.
