Imams Required to Adhere to New Dress and Conduct Guidelines
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has introduced a revised code of conduct for imams and muezzins, implementing stricter regulations regarding their attire and behaviour.
The updated guidelines, published in the government gazette on Thursday, aim to reinforce standards that reflect Islamic values and societal expectations.
Under the new rules, religious leaders are prohibited from wearing casual clothing, such as jeans and T-shirts, during prayer services. Imams and muezzins are required to don appropriate attire, including head coverings, when leading prayers or performing the call to prayer.
In addition to the dress code, the regulations emphasise the importance of cleanliness and respectful behaviour. Imams are urged to maintain courteous interactions with mosque visitors and the public, embodying the dignity and respect inherent in their role both professionally and personally.
The guidelines also address concerns about preserving religious harmony, instructing imams and muezzins to avoid preaching views that contradict the Religious Unity Act or promote extremist ideologies.
The Ministry has warned that non-compliance with the new regulations could result in disciplinary action under Civil Service rules.
