Only Two Percent of Maldivian Youth Involved in Crime, Says Police
Police spokesperson Ahmed Shifan has revealed that only two percent of Maldivian youth aged 15 to 34 are involved in criminal activities, emphasising that this already low figure can be further reduced.
In a post on X, Shifan highlighted that the vast majority of Maldivian youth are law-abiding and productive members of society. Citing recent data, he noted that with a proactive and collaborative approach, the percentage of youth involved in crime could decline even further.

“By fostering more opportunities for engagement and growth, we can unlock the full potential of our youth, empowering them to contribute to a brighter, safer future for the Maldives,” Shifan stated.
However, police reports indicate that youth make up a significant proportion of those arrested for crimes, with many offenders being repeat violators. This underscores the need for targeted interventions to address recidivism and support rehabilitation efforts.
Authorities continue to stress the importance of community involvement in creating opportunities and support systems to prevent youth from turning to crime while ensuring that those at risk are guided towards constructive paths.
