MDP Fayyaz Announces Bid for 2028 Presidential Primaries
Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Fayyaz Ismail, has declared his intention to contest in the party’s 2028 presidential primaries.
The announcement was made yesterday in a WhatsApp group for MDP National Council members, marking him as the first candidate to officially announce a bid for the party’s ticket.
Fayyaz, regarded as one of MDP’s most prominent leaders, is expected to be a key contender in what is anticipated to be a highly competitive primary race. Speculation is rife that former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih may also enter the contest, though he has yet to confirm his intentions.
When asked about the matter during a recent talk show on Raajje TV, Solih revealed that he had discussed his future political plans with MDP leaders but stopped short of announcing a candidacy. He also noted that approximately five individuals have expressed interest in vying for the party’s presidential ticket, describing the development as a sign of healthy internal competition.
Meanwhile, the 2028 presidential race is already drawing significant attention, with former President Abdulla Yameen of the People’s National Front also confirming his candidacy.
As the MDP prepares for what promises to be a dynamic primary process, the party’s choice of candidate will likely play a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape leading up to the 2028 elections.
