Investigation Launched Against Immigration Officers for Illicit Enrichment
The Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan that an investigation is underway against five Immigration officers suspected of illicit enrichment.
The case, initiated by the Maldives Police Service, stems from allegations of misconduct related to handling migrant affairs.
Minister Ihusan revealed the development in a post on X, stating that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for the strictest legal action against uniformed personnel found guilty of actions that undermine public trust and tarnish the reputation of their institutions.
According to the Minister, the investigation follows a tip-off suggesting that the officers violated laws and regulations while conducting migration-related tasks, allegedly facilitating unlawful personal gain.
The investigation has already seen authorities seize electronic devices from the implicated officers and conduct searches of their residences. Minister Ihusan emphasised that such conduct would not be tolerated under the current administration, which is committed to upholding integrity within public institutions.
Further updates on the case will be provided in collaboration with the police and other relevant agencies, Ihusan said.
This incident emerges as the Maldives government intensifies efforts to address illegal migration. Ongoing initiatives include collecting biometric data from all immigrants residing in the country and conducting regular raids to identify and detain undocumented individuals. These measures aim to strengthen oversight and ensure the lawful management of migrant populations.
