The air quality in Villimale’ has reached a hazardous level, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 139, posing significant health risks. Individuals in high-risk groups, such as those with respiratory conditions or cardiovascular issues, are advised to take extra precautions.
In contrast, the AQI in Male’ City currently stood at 94 this afternoon, a moderate level, according to data from IQ Air.
IQ Air also reported that the Maldives has experienced worsening atmospheric pollution since last week. The current haze affecting the country largely originates from the northern regions of India, where seasonal environmental factors contribute to elevated pollution levels.
Historically, the Maldives experiences a decline in air quality each December due to transboundary haze. This year, the situation has been exacerbated by severe pollution in India. Last month, schools and offices in New Delhi were forced to close due to unusually high pollution levels.
New Delhi is consistently ranked among the most polluted cities globally. The city’s poor air quality results from various factors, including factory emissions, vehicle pollution, and burning agricultural fields. These pollutants often spread across the region, affecting neighbouring countries like the Maldives.
