Speaking with the residents of AA. Rasdhoo Island, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has affirmed the government’s priority to rehabilitate drug addicts and ensure a drug-free, constructive future for the youth and nation.

At the meeting held yesterday, the President stated that the nation has endured the impact of drug addiction for decades, with the problem escalating over the past 30 to 40 years due to a lack of effective measures by previous administrations.

In his speech, the President highlighted the government’s efforts over the past year to combat the drug trade, including increased search operations targeting drug vendors and the deportation of up to 153 undocumented foreigners linked to drug trafficking. He reported that authorities had raided and investigated 13,435 drug-related venues over the past year, with 8,581 raids conducted by November 2023 alone. Additionally, he revealed that 655 kg of drugs had been seized this year, bringing the total value of drugs confiscated under the current administration to 1.3 billion ruffiyya.

Recognising the current government’s commitment to addressing substance abuse, the President noted that a bill has been introduced in Parliament to drive further progress. He also emphasized the importance of public cooperation in achieving a lasting solution and underscored the need for collective effort to tackle national societal challenges.
