India Donates MVR 8.5 Million for Police Academy Renovation in Maldives

India has extended support to the Maldives with a donation of MVR 8.5 million for the renovation of the National College of Policing and Law Enforcement in Addu City.

The announcement was made during the graduation ceremony of the 37th Police Initial Training Course at the Police Academy. Speaking at the event, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusan, underscored the significance of India’s assistance, highlighting the strong ties between the two nations.

Minister Ihusan expressed his gratitude to the Indian government for its ongoing support. The ceremony was also attended by Amit Garg, Director of India’s National Police Academy, further reflecting the collaborative spirit between the two countries.

Addressing the graduating trainees, Minister Ihusan described the day as a pivotal moment in their careers, marking the beginning of their journey as trained officers serving the nation. He emphasised the pride and honour associated with their roles while reminding them of the weighty responsibilities ahead.

The minister urged the new recruits to play an active role in tackling the nation’s challenges, including the drug crisis and gang-related crimes. He also stressed the importance of protecting children from criminal activities and fostering a safe and productive environment for their growth.

Minister Ihusan further outlined the police force’s role in addressing illegal migration, noting the importance of collaboration with other institutions to effectively manage the issue.

Commending the police for their efforts, the minister highlighted a major achievement in curbing the drug trade, revealing that drugs worth MVR 1.3 billion were intercepted over the past year. He expressed pride in the progress made despite persistent challenges.
