Maldives Enforces Nationwide Ban on Vaping Devices from Today

The Maldives’ ban on the import, sale, and use of vaping devices and accessories has officially come into force as of 15 December 2024.
This measure stems from an amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, ratified by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on 13 November 2024. The legislation aims to curb the prevalence of e-cigarette use and regulate related activities more stringently.
Under the new regulations, severe penalties have been introduced for violations, including:
- Importers: Fined MVR 50,000, with an additional MVR 10,000 for each imported device or product.
- Retailers: Fined MVR 20,000, plus MVR 10,000 for each banned item sold.
- Distributors (free distribution): Fined MVR 10,000.
- Selling or distributing to minors: Additional penalty of MVR 50,000.
- Individual users: Fined MVR 5,000 per offence.
The amendment seeks to prohibit the import, sale, and free distribution of vape products across the Maldives, with the goal of addressing growing public health concerns. Additionally, the revised law increases penalties and enhances enforcement measures to combat violations effectively.
To support individuals looking to quit smoking, the government has established Smoking Cessation Clinics, offering resources and assistance. Those seeking help can reach out via the helpline at 1676.
This initiative marks a significant step in the country’s broader efforts to promote public health and tackle smoking-related issues, as per the government.
