Health Ministry to Expand No-Smoking Zones Under New Regulations
The Ministry of Health has announced plans to increase the number of designated no-smoking zones as part of new regulations aimed at reducing tobacco use and its impact on public health.
A draft regulation has already been prepared and will soon be shared for public consultation, according to the Health Ministry. Speaking during a panel discussion organised by PSM News and the ministry, Deputy Minister of Health Ismail Zahir stated that the regulations, once gazetted, would lead to a significant expansion of no-smoking areas.
The Deputy Minister highlighted that the new regulations would facilitate enforcement by law enforcement agencies, making it easier to implement tobacco-related laws effectively.
Recent amendments to the Tobacco Control Act have already banned the importation, distribution, sale, and use of electronic cigarettes, vaping devices, and related products in the Maldives. Addressing these changes, Zahir said the ministry is collaborating with local councils to raise public awareness about the amendments.
“We are working with councils, women’s development committees, and associations to educate the public across the atolls about the amendments to the Tobacco Control Act. Additionally, we are training relevant staff within government agencies to ensure smooth implementation,” Zahir said.
In a related move, the Health Ministry has launched a 24-hour hotline, 1676, to support individuals seeking to quit tobacco use. The hotline aims to assist those struggling with tobacco addiction, offering guidance and resources for a healthier lifestyle.
The Ministry’s latest measures reflect its continued commitment to promoting public health and reducing the prevalence of tobacco use nationwide.
