Four Fined as Vape Ban Takes Effect in the Maldives

MV+ News Desk | December 19, 2024

Police have disclosed that four individuals have been fined since the Maldives implemented a nationwide ban on the sale and use of vape products.

The prohibition came into effect on Tuesday following amendments to the Tobacco Control Act. In the three days since enforcement began, fines totalling MVR 20,000 have been issued for violations of the revised law, according to police reports.

The amended Tobacco Control Act imposes strict penalties for activities involving vaping devices and related products.

The government has also significantly increased taxes on tobacco products. As a result, the cost of a pack of cigarettes has risen sharply from the previous price of MVR 100.

Authorities have emphasised that these measures aim to curb tobacco and vaping use across the country, aligning with broader public health objectives.
