Muizzu Express Confidence in New HDC Managing Director
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has expressed strong support for Mauroof Jameel, the newly appointed Managing Director of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC). Speaking to reporters outside the President’s Office yesterday, President Muizzu reaffirmed his commitment to addressing corruption allegations surrounding the corporation.
“I am very confident that things will improve,” said President Muizzu. “I need everyone to be supportive. For example, former Minister Mauroof Jameel, who I appointed to HDC today, is someone I trust deeply. He will uphold integrity, remain committed, and work with professionalism.”
The President stressed the need for individuals of integrity within all government institutions, asserting that corruption would not be tolerated. “I do not want any government institution to facilitate corruption, nor will I allow it. The same applies to all companies and ministries under the government.”
President Muizzu also expressed confidence in the ongoing police investigation into the allegations of corruption within HDC. “No one has the right to acquire land, flats, or other assets outside of established laws and regulations. Everything must proceed in an organised manner,” he said.
The President’s remarks come in the wake of revelations that HDC had issued permits to Fazeel Rasheed, the brother of former Managing Director Fazul Rasheed, using forged documents under the Binveriyaa housing scheme. The scandal has led to the suspension of all HDC board members except the chairman, raising serious concerns about governance within the corporation.
Mauroof Jameel’s appointment as Managing Director followed the resignation of Fazul Rasheed amidst mounting allegations of widespread corruption under his tenure. A veteran public servant and former Minister of Construction, Mauroof has been involved in Hulhumalé’s development since the early days of the Hulhumalé Development Unit under former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
Former President Gayoom also welcomed Mauroof’s appointment yesterday, describing him as a “person of integrity, ability, and experience.”
Delighted by the appointment of a person of such integrity, ability and experience as Mauroof Jameel as head of HDC. Congratulations and good luck! pic.twitter.com/PbhJJvOosz— Maumoon Abdul Gayoom (@maumoonagayoom) December 22, 2024
The Binveriyaa scandal has placed HDC at the centre of public scrutiny, with the government vowing to restore accountability and transparency in its operations.
