15 HDC Employees Dismissed Amid Corruption Scandal

MV+ News Desk | December 23, 2024

Fifteen employees of the state-owned Housing Development Corporation (HDC) have been dismissed amidst escalating allegations of corruption relating to the allocation of land plots and flats.

Among those removed are senior officials who were suspended following the surfacing of corruption allegations last week. Media reports suggest that the dismissals are also linked to the unauthorised leak of confidential company information.

The scandal unfolded after documents circulated on social media revealed that several individuals had submitted applications to build on land plots obtained fraudulently using forged documents. Those implicated reportedly include Fazeel Rasheed, the brother of former HDC Managing Director Fazul Rasheed, who resigned yesterday under mounting pressure and corruption accusations.

All HDC board members, except Chairman Ahmed Nasif, were suspended last week. Speaking to the media, Nasif confirmed the company’s commitment to cooperating with the ongoing investigations by the police and the Anti-Corruption Commission. He also emphasised the need to rebuild public trust in the corporation.

In response to the unfolding events, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu appointed Mauroof Jameel as the new Managing Director of HDC yesterday. Mauroof, a veteran public servant and former minister, has played a key role in Hulhumalé’s development since its inception under the Hulhumalé Development Unit within the President’s Office.

The dismissals and leadership changes are seen as critical steps in addressing the corruption allegations and restoring the integrity of the state-owned corporation.
