Nasheed Weighs In on Binveriyaa Corruption Scandal
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the allocation of land plots under the Binveriyaa Scheme, as the state-owned Housing Development Corporation (HDC) face mounting allegations of corruption.
In a post on his official X account today, Nasheed said he believed that land plots were being unfairly awarded even before the recent controversy.
“I must repeat what i said before regarding land plots being unfairly awarded. The previous list included many individuals who would have unjustly received land, and now it seems like another link in that chain of injustice.” he said
“However, with an investigation underway and changes in HDC leadership, I am hopeful that the Maldives Police Service will conduct a thorough inquiry and that Mauroof Jameel will take steps to correct these wrongs.”
Last week, documents leaked on social media revealed that several individuals had falsely obtained plots of land from Hulhumale using forged agreements of Binveriyaa scheme. The documents indicated that permits were issued by HDC to construct boundary walls on the plots. Among the individuals implicated was Fazeel Rasheed, brother of HDC’s then-Managing Director Fazul Rasheed.
In response, both the Maldives Police Service and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) launched investigations into the matter. Fazul Rasheed resigned yesterday amid mounting allegations and growing public pressure. Several senior officials at HDC have also been dismissed.
Mauroof Jameel, a former minister and seasoned public servant, was appointed yesterday to lead the corporation, marking a significant leadership overhaul as authorities work to restore public trust.
