Maldives Welcomes UN Resolution Seeking ICJ Opinion on Israel’s Humanitarian Obligations
The Maldivian government has expressed its support for a United Nations General Assembly resolution requesting an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding Israel’s obligations to facilitate humanitarian aid in Palestine.
The resolution, co-sponsored by the Maldives alongside other member states, was presented by Norway in collaboration with a group of nations. It garnered significant backing, passing with 137 votes in favour. The resolution seeks the ICJ’s opinion on Israel’s obligations concerning the activities of the United Nations, other international organisations, and third states in the context of the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
In a statement issued today, the Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the resolution as a critical step in upholding the mission of the United Nations and other humanitarian entities operating in the region.
“The Maldives appreciates the overwhelming support for this resolution and regards it as a testament to the commitment to realise a sovereign and independent Palestinian State based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital,” the ministry stated.
The Maldives’ endorsement of the resolution underscores its longstanding support for the Palestinian cause and its call for international efforts to ensure humanitarian aid reaches those in need in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
