NDMA Endorses Maldives Disaster Risk Reduction Plan 2024-2030
The Maldives Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy 2024-2030 was endorsed yesterday by the National Disaster Management Council in a meeting chaired by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The strategy aims to safeguard the country’s natural and built environment, as well as the homes and assets of its citizens, from climate hazards and other disasters. It emphasizes disaster preparedness, fostering resilient communities, and achieving sustainable development. Its implementation is expected to enhance mitigation efforts and support the development of human resources.
The National Disaster Management Council developed this strategy to bolster the Maldives’ global advocacy on the risks that Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face due to climate change. This effort aligns with Goal 5 of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, which calls for increasing the number of national and local disaster risk reduction strategies by 2030.
The UN General Assembly endorsed the Sendai Framework following the 2015 Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR). The Maldives is among a select group of nations to have created such a comprehensive strategy.
An annexe to the strategy highlights efforts to streamline resilience initiatives and improve efficiency through the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Strategy and the National Adaptation Plan, which is being developed in accordance with the Paris Agreement.
