The seizure, carried out earlier this month, was followed by the destruction of the contraband at Thilafushi’s waste disposal area on Sunday, 22 December 2024. Authorities have confirmed that the container’s contents violated national export bans designed to protect marine species.
Shark fishing has been prohibited in Maldivian waters since March 2010, with additional protections implemented in 2020 under the General Fisheries Regulation (R-75/2020), which declared all shark species fully protected.
