Hussain Amr, the former Managing Director of State Trading Organisation (STO) during the previous administration, has left The Democrats to rejoin the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The Democrats have remained largely inactive in recent months, particularly after failing to secure any seats in the parliamentary elections. Since the defeat, the party has not conducted any significant political activities.

Amr, who played a key role in the formation of The Democrats, had also withdrawn from the political spotlight. His return to the MDP was announced by former Hulhumalé MP Ali Niyaz, a prominent figure within the party. Niyaz welcomed Amr back through a post on social media platform X, stating that the greatest opportunities for political reform are always within the MDP.

The Democrats were formed by a breakaway faction of the MDP led by supporters of former President Mohamed Nasheed, following ideological differences. Members who defected to The Democrats had openly criticised the MDP leadership and its governance, claiming the party had failed to meet its objectives.
