The State Electric Company (STELCO) reported that earlier today, two high-voltage (HV) transformers in Hulhumale Phase 2 were deliberately vandalised, leading to significant disruptions in the electricity network.

The transformers, which were protected by boundary walls and double-locked enclosures, were breached by the perpetrators. The gates were damaged, locks were tampered with, and the HV system was interfered with, according to STELCO.

The methodical disengagement of HV switches indicates that the individuals involved had technical knowledge of transformer systems and operations. Such interference with critical infrastructure poses severe risks, including electrocution, serious injury, or even fatalities. These risks extend not only to the perpetrators but also to the surrounding community.

“The tragic deaths caused by transformer vandalism last year serve as a painful reminder of the severe consequences of such acts. This incident highlights the urgent need for increased public awareness and preventative measures to protect lives and ensure the safety of critical infrastructure,” wrote Hussain Fahmy, Managing Director of STELCO on X.

STELCO has begun an investigation into the incident and is implementing measures to prevent future occurrences.
