Ooredoo Maldives has launched its calendar for 2025, featuring Maldivian folklore characters powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The innovative calendar was launched at a special ceremony titled ‘Future Meets Nostalgia’ held in Hulhumale on Thursday night.
Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Mr. Ali Ihusan attended the ceremony which unveiled the Maldivian folklore-inspired design brought by a fusion of tradition and technology.
The calendar features beloved characters from popular Maldivian folklore brought to life through the innovative integration of digital engagement. This is also the first NFC-integrated calendar in the Maldives.
According to Ooredoo, each month of the Ooredoo Calendar 2025 highlights a character from timeless stories deeply rooted in Maldivian culture. Inclusive of popular stories Foolhudhigu Handi and Safari Kaiydha, 12 characters will be featured in the calendar. These characters represent the soul of Maldivian heritage.
“Ooredoo Calendar 2025 represents our commitment to preserving Maldivian culture while leveraging technology to make it accessible and engaging for future generations,” said Hussain Niyaz, Chief Commercial Officer of Ooredoo Maldives. “By merging the nostalgia of folklore with the excitement of digital interactivity, we’re not only celebrating our rich traditions but also ensuring that these stories remain alive for years to come.”
The calendar was developed with technical assistance from Loopcraft and historical knowledge and research contributed by historian Naajih Didi.
Speaking at the ceremony, Loopcraft’s CEO Mohamed Shamheel said that the folklore characters were built with advanced machine learning, with over 25,000 words of content being fed to develop each character with its distinct backstory, characters and traits.
The calendar comes with an interactive experience. Customers can now engage directly with these characters through the advanced AI chatbox created by Ooeredoo. Currently, only Foolhudhigu Handi and Handi Gan’duvaru Dhonkamana are available for chat, but Ooredoo said that each month, a new character will be unlocked.
The company said this initiative is part of Ooredoo’s larger vision of building a Digital Maldives by using the latest technology as a bridge between generations and to create meaningful connections while preserving the essence of local heritage.
