Male City Council has announced the formation of a disaster committee to address the potential impacts of severe weather, following a forecast by the Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) predicting heavy rainfall starting today.
The city’s early-year weather has been characterised by intense rainfall. After a significant downpour at the beginning of the year, conditions briefly improved. However, rain returned on Saturday, causing flooding in several areas and raising concerns about further disruptions.
In response to these challenges, the city council confirmed via a post on social media platform X that it has established a disaster committee. The committee’s primary role will be to prepare the city for worsening weather conditions in the coming days and to ensure timely measures are implemented to minimise damage and safeguard the public.
The MET Office has warned that rain clouds are forming near the Maldives, likely bringing heavy rain and thundershowers to parts of the country from Wednesday to Friday.
