Residents of Addu City have reported frequent power and water outages, highlighting a severe crisis and long-standing, unresolved utility issues.
FENAKA, the utility provider, has been notifying residents of planned power disruptions through its Viber community groups. Notices dating back to October 2024 indicate that the problem has persisted for months, with water supply issues also becoming more common, especially at night.
As Ramadan approaches, residents are concerned about how FENAKA will manage the expected increase in demand for electricity and water. Many have shared their frustrations on social media, citing damages to household appliances, school exam delays, and difficulties faced by vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and sick. Some have even called for compensation.
FENAKA stated that the power cuts are due to a fault in the CPS generator set, and the company is working to procure spare parts for repairs. However, no timeline for resolution has been provided, and no long-term solutions have been suggested to address the ongoing utility issues.

Mayor Ali Nizar has expressed concern over the lack of upgrades to the city’s generators, confirming that residents experience around three hours of power cuts each day. He emphasised that the installation of new generators is essential to resolving the issue. Additionally, he pointed out that all utility services, including sewerage, have failed in the city.
MP Ahmed Azaan, along with other Addu MPs, has met with FENAKA to address the crisis. FENAKA previously contracted a Chinese company to build a new 30-megawatt power plant to resolve the electricity issues, but the progress of this project remains unclear.
