The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has presented the ‘Medal of Bravery’ to employees who recently thwarted a robbery at a transformer station in Hulhumalé Phase II.

STELCO confirmed via a post on X that the employees were recognised for their courage in stopping the attempted theft at one of its facilities. One employee sustained injuries after being attacked with a wrench during the incident.

The utility provider stated that the awards honour the bravery of staff who risked their lives while performing their public duties. The company also emphasised its commitment to employee safety and pledged to take serious action against such incidents.

According to STELCO’s Managing Director, Hussain Fahmy, the employees had been dispatched to the transformer site on Tuesday evening following a power outage at the MPL housing towers. Upon arrival, they encountered the ongoing robbery. In an attempt to escape, one of the perpetrators assaulted a STELCO employee with a wrench.

Fahmy explained that the transformers in Hulhumalé Phase II were not part of any active STELCO projects, which meant the site lacked CCTV surveillance. However, the company is now collaborating with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to install security cameras at the location.

Incidents involving the theft of transformers and related components have become increasingly common in recent times.
