With the support of Maldives Blood Services, six children suffering from thalassemia have successfully undergone bone marrow transplants abroad and returned home to their families.

In a statement, Maldives Blood Services highlighted this as a testament to ongoing efforts to enhance care for children with thalassemia. The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to improving the quality of life for patients affected by the genetic blood disorder.

The six patients travelled overseas last year to undergo the life-saving procedure.

The Maldives is home to the largest population of thalassemia patients in the South East Asia region, with over 600 individuals registered.

To address this pressing health concern, the government last year introduced a 10-year masterplan aimed at preventing and controlling thalassemia. The plan includes the establishment of a specialised hospital dedicated to thalassemia patients, reflecting a significant step towards improving treatment and care within the country.

Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder requiring regular blood transfusions and, in severe cases, bone marrow transplants. The recent success stories highlight the impact of collaborative efforts in providing advanced medical care to Maldivian patients.
