While speaking to Fainu residents during the inauguration of the water and sewerage system on the island, the president noted that the airport project is something the people of Fainu wish for, and it will be done soon as the people wish for.

“God willing, the work on this project will start very soon,” the President said in Dhivehi.

Regarding the newly inaugurated water and sewage system, he noted that some changes will have to be made to the existing system, as the area it covers overlaps with the area designated for the airport. He said the overlap issue will be solved most cost-effectively.

“… once the area for the airport is cleared, without halting water and sewage facilities, without stopping those services and while continuing to provide them, we will arrange it in a way to change the area so that work [on the project] will go forward very smoothly,” he assured in Dhivehi.

He said the development of an airport is something the island’s people and constituents have been hoping for.

“It will play a big role in the economic development of this island, this atoll, this whole area even,” he said.

Muizzu said the airport would allow for an increase in resorts in the area and recalled that he pledged to facilitate during his term in office. He assured the citizens that he would prioritise this project.

While he was in Fainu, the Island Council and Bank of Maldives (BML) signed an agreement to facilitate ATM services on the island. He also met with the Fainu Island Council, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and institutional heads to discuss the key concerns for the island’s development.
