China has provided agricultural equipment worth MVR 213,000 (CNY 100,000 / USD 14,000) to the Maldives as part of an agreement signed last year with the Sichuan Provincial Department of Agriculture and the Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare stated that the equipment has now been brought to the Maldives. The donation includes 25 sprays for large trees, 100 test kits to assess soil fertility, 35 controllers for automatic sprinklers, and 340 test kits for avian influenza.
According to the ministry, these resources will help address the increasing number of cases related to tree pests that have been reported to the ministry.
Although pest control falls under the mandate of island councils, many islands lack the necessary facilities to manage the issue effectively. As a result, the donated equipment will be distributed to atoll and city councils to assist in addressing these challenges.
