Cat Overpopulation

The overgrowing population of cats is a concern shared by both the cat lovers community and others. Many homeless felines can be seen roaming around Hulhumale’, Male’, Vilimale’ and even the islands, reproducing at a rapid speed. Kittens as young as five months old can become pregnant, producing more kittens and continuing the cycle.

The problem has been accelerated by not only  pet owners who do not spay or neuter their felines, but the failure also falls on the system with inaccessible facilities for these services. Cat lovers generally agree that cats need to be sterilized to stop them from multiplying, however, the only vet services available is situated in Vilimale’, and the waiting line is long.

Cat owners also report inadequate quality of service provided since there is only one vet available in this region, which the government desperately need to rectify. Organizations such as Care for Paws is notable with their initiatives into reducing the cat population and taking care of street cats.
