The leadership of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People’s National Congress (PNC) has joined forces with the aim of securing victory in the upcoming presidential election, according to an announcement made by PNC’s presidential contender, Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The Maldivian Supreme Court delivered a verdict on Wednesday affirming the Election Commission of Maldives’ (ECM) decision to reject the candidacy of former President Abdullah Yameen. Consequently, Yameen’s hopes of participating in the presidential race were dashed.
In response to the court’s ruling, Yameen urged the PPM/PNC leadership to boycott the election, sparking a contentious debate within the party ranks.
In a joint declaration, the coalition has pledged to overcome internal discord and shift their focus towards securing electoral triumph, backed by the unwavering support of Yameen. The coalition affirmed that Dr. Muizzu will stand as their presidential candidate, enjoying the full backing of Yameen and the party’s members.
Addressing the media during a press conference, PNC’s presidential aspirant, Dr. Muizzu, outlined his priorities upon a successful election outcome, with the immediate focus being on securing the release of Yameen.
The coalition has further announced its intention to unveil its comprehensive manifesto in the near future.
