President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially named Mohamed Sham’aan Waheed as the new Controller General of Immigration in a ceremony held at the President’s Office last evening.

Sham’aan, with 14-year background at the Maldives Immigration, received his letter of appointment during the event. This appointment follows the departure of former Controller General of Immigration, Mohamed Ahmed Hussain (Hanafy).

It’s noteworthy that Sham’aan faced suspension from his position in Immigration during the previous administration. The reason behind his suspension was traced back to his social media activity, where he expressed support for former President Abdullah Yameen. However, last year, the Employment Tribunal ruled his dismissal as illegal and mandated his reinstatement.

Taking to social media, Sham’aan revealed details about his journey, citing actions by the previous government such as the cancellation of his student loan, which led to him discontinuing his master’s program and returning home. Upon his return, he was reassigned to a different agency unrelated to his previous responsibilities, ultimately ending up as an immigration officer.

With a degree in Law Enforcement from the University of Western Sydney, Australia, Sham’aan brings a qualified background to his new role as the Controller General of Immigration.

Additionally, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu extended letters of appointment to various other senior government positions during the ceremony.
